SEMLS 2.0 Reflections

Dear Friends,

The SEMLS 2.0 class provide me with knowledge on many new technologies. It was a valuable learning experience, well worth my time and effort. I would recommend this class to any librarian wanting to learn about Web 2.0. The online format was very conducive to the topics and provided great practice with the technology. As far as the most useful tool, that’s a hard question: all the tools are very useful depending on your needs and specific projects.  A very useful tool for me is the bookmarking site del.icio.us. It’s a basic tool that is very easy and helpful on a daily basis at work. Also, I liked learning about blogging. My least favorite application was Facebook, but that’s mostly about security issues and my personal hang-ups about the space.

At the library, I would like to use blogs for library information and book clubs. Also, I would like to have podcast for booktalks and reviews for the students. These technologies would provide an incentive and venue for reluctant readers, but tech savy students to share their reviews and thoughts. In addition, I would like to use some information literacy You tube videos and create an orientation video.

In conclusion, I had a great time doing the assignments and look forward to more classes offered online by SEMLS on new technology.

Walt Disney World Vacation

Dear Bloggers,

Yes, I am anxiously anticipating my upcoming trip to the Walt Disney World Resort. So, I browsed You Tube for videos on the “most magical place in the world.” This video provides an overview of the theme parks.

Looking forward to vacation

I am looking forward to vacation next week. I am spending my vacation at a spa in New Hampshire. I am excited about my hot stone massage, pedicure, and facial. This is my first vacation at a spa, so hopefully I will enjoy being by myself for an entire week. I have my books on order from SAILS, so I look forward to time for relaxation and reading. It will be a nice break from the daily grind in Fall River.

This weekend, I read Ana’s Story by Jenna Bush. It was very well done and I recommend purchasing for school libraries. It has sections on helping children and causes, hiv/aids, child abuse issues, and a great discussion question section.

Yes, New Theme

Ok, I changed the theme for the blog. I prefer the RSS link at the top of the page and a two column format with extra links. I did not like how the link was presented for my previous theme. But, I am disappointed that the site admin link has disappeared on this page and I can not find any way to put it back in the columns. I searched the FAQ and no information given to include that link. Any ideas?

Thanks!

Kim

Another Week

Dear Friends,

Another busy week at the library! This week, the school is making the transition to second semester study halls and classes. I have to visit every single study hall to review the procedures for obtaining a library pass. There are about 55 study halls at Durfee. Also, I have my new class for the second semester on Research and Evaluation.  Well, at least I am not bored. I can not even contemplate looking at all the news sites with the RSS feeds, etc. Seems like too much to do in a day.

Keeley Library, BMC Durfee High School

This is a picture of my home away from home, the Keeley Library at BMC Durfee High School in Fall River, Massachusetts. The library was dedicated to Ambrose F. Keeley, a former Principal from 1955-1960. His daughter teaches at the school. Next year, I am changing the green reference signs to durfee colors of Red and Black.

Introduction

Hi!

My name is Kimberly Lavoie.  Currently, I am the Librarian/IMC Coordinator at BMC Durfee High School in Fall River, Massachusetts.  It is strange being the librarian, because I graduated from Durfee and was a student library aide. I enjoy working with the students/faculty and am developing a graphic novel collection.  Also, I teach an information literacy course to 11th and 12th graders, so that occupies a considerable amount of time with preparation and writing a textbook and assignments.

In my free time, I enjoy visiting museums, playing with my cat, going to Boston College Eagles sporting events, movies, traveling, and of course reading. During April vacation, I am visiting Disney World to attend my friend’s wedding in Epcot.

With work and all my extra-curricular activities,  my positive experience with the Internet is finally being able to have a high speed connection at my new house and setting up online banking. It’s wonderful, not to write checks on a Sunday night.
